If the pressure is significantly higher, your records will wear out much faster. Additionally, a turntable priced between €40 and €80 is unlikely to have a stylus that treats your records with care, let alone one capable of accurately reproducing the sound embedded in the grooves of LPs and singles. Regardless of the turntable used, a stylus does not last forever. The average lifespan of a stylus is 200 to 1200 hours of playback, depending on the type and material. Yet they all have one thing in common: they have a limited lifespan. Use of inferior and / or worn out needles can irreversibly damage gramophone records. Turning records gray was a literal concept in the last century (when bakelite / shellac 78 rpm records were made); steel needles actually shred the records gray. After the Second World War, most records were made of vinyl (PVC / polyvinyl chloride). Vinyl records can also be turned gray, but in a figurative sense: you don't see it, but the grooves get damaged and that can never be repaired, not even with everything that Walvis Products has to offer in terms of maintenance. Sapphire and diamond? A sapphire (stone) stylus has an expected lifespan of approximately 40 playing hours. Synthetic (pressed) diamond needles have a lifespan of 250 to 800 playing hours. With the hardness of the stylus, the quality of the sound reproduction also increases. Diamond needles not only last longer, they sound way better! Yet one diamond needle is not identical to the other. Here is some distinction: - Diamond residual material: the tips of this kind of turntable needles are made from diamond powder (grinding residue) that is pressed together with a compound in the desired model of the tip. We also call them powder diamond tip needles. These types of needles have an average lifespan of 250 to 300 playing hours. - Pressed synthetic needles: here the tip of the stylus is made of synthetic diamond, a production process in which carbon is pressed under enormous pressure into industrial / synthetic diamond. Standard needles are directly pressed here. Some of these needles are still polished after pressing. This gives a better scan, less distortion and less wear. The expected lifespan of this type of record player needles is 400 to 600 playing hours (depending on the needle pressure and other settings). This type of needle is harder than powder diamond tip needles. That immediately explains the longer lifespan. - Polished synthetic needles: these are high-quality polished needles which are made of synthetic diamond. A harder needle gives a longer life and a better sound quality. The lifespan of this type of needle is 600 to 800 playing hours (depending on the size of the diamond from which the needle tip is cut). Nowadays there are also Sibatha and other Super-Ellipse needles made exclusively in Japan. Japanese synthetic diamonds are better than most European ones. The expected lifetime of this type of Japanese needle tips is no less than 900 to 1500 playing hours! - Naked diamond needles: these come with a needle tip cut from a naturally shaped (genuine) diamond. These are the hardest diamonds that exist. The lifespan of a naked diamond stylus is around 2000 playing hours. In addition this long lifespan, the music reproduction of these needles is also mostly audiophile. A wider frequency range, more clarity and a more realistic reproduction is the logical consequence. Naked diamond needles are expensive, but also a good investment because of their much longer lifespan and the much more detailed representation of the recording on the vinyl. Fortunately, better new original elements are fitted with a Naked Diamond Tip as standard. Also important: do not immediately play the same record again. Every stylus causes heat due to the friction with the groove walls of the vinyl. LPs and singles therefore need some recovery time. If the same records are played directly or too quickly in succession, the grooves of the record can be seriously damaged. Not really ideal, but at least affordable. ∙ D.I.Y. mixing distilled or demineralised water with a cleaning agent is also an option (demineralised water is available at hardware stores, for example). Add about 10% alcohol and 1 small drop of a good detergent per liter. ∙ Perhaps most importantly: once you've cleaned your vinyl records, make sure they stay clean! In the first instance, these were packaged in Jewel Cases that were made much heavier and more robust. As the CD market exploded during the following decades, market parties were looking for ways to produce these boxes more cheaply. This was at the expense of the weight and the overall quality of the boxes. Although the demand for CDs in Europe is nowadays not even a fraction of what was sold in its heyday, many suppliers are still importing CD cases from China in particular today, which, although cheap, are of totally inferior quality. In fact, these packages are no longer made for the European market, but for countries where CDs are still commonly used (countries that belong to the Third World) and where the quality requirements are much lower. Yet there are countless importers in Europe who market this "junk" either via the internet or via chainstores. This to the great frustration of all those collectors and enthusiasts who just want to have their music available in an old-fashioned way on a physical sound carrier (Compact Disc or Gramophone record). This annoyance lives with us too! Walvis has been around since 1961 as one of the leading specialist European suppliers of media packaging. At the time, we were overtaken both from the left and from the right by market parties that were mostly strange to the market and did not care about quality, but competed only on price. That's a tough question as we don't sell bad record brushes anyway. In addition, the answer strongly depends on the purpose of use that is intended with the brush. At Walvis Products we roughly distinguish the following types of vinyl record brushes: Carbon Fiber Record Brushes Gramophone records absorb static charge very easily. Carbon brushes have as most important property that they eliminate static charge from vinyl records. In addition, a carbon brush also easily removes loose dust. A carbon record brush is intended for daily use: just wipe the record on the turntable and dust and static charge disappear like snow in the sun. In addition to regular carbon record brushes, there are also arm-type carbon fiber brushes: a trailing brush removes dust and static charge from an LP during playback by "running along" with a second arm next to the tonearm. Velvet Record Brushes Velvet brushes are ideal for removing loose dirt and dust before playing. The simplest way of use applies here too; remove the dirt with the brush while it is on the (rotating) platform of the record player. Unfortunately, velvet brushes do not have any anti-static effect, but they are much more effective than carbon brushes when it comes to removing dust and dirt. Do not forget to regularly clean the velvet pad of the brush: this is the place where the dust and dirt that comes off your records accumulates. Microfibre Record Brushes These kind of record brushes are actually more American than European: you don't see them so often here. Microfibre brushes look a bit like velvet brushes, but are always used in combination with a spray. A good example is our import line from GrooveWasher - beautiful largely handmade high-end cleaning products. Combination brushes These types of brushes represent the best of both worlds! Most combination brushes have three compartments: on each long outer side there is a narrow row of carbon fibers. These penetrate deep into the grooves of a vinyl record and have an anti-static effect. In the middle, these brushes have a wide velvet pad that effectively absorbs the dust and dirt. Application brushes Intended for the application, distribution and wet cleaning of gramophone records using vinyl record cleaning fluid. These types of brushes are hardly or not at all suitable for the daily (dry) cleaning of your records. The nylon or goat hair bristles are perfect for wet-cleaning, but in fact too hard to dry-wipe a gramophone record.
