Beware of suitcase record players!
Thinking about getting a fun suitcase-style turntable? Be careful! Avoid damaging your vinyl records—it would be a shame!
These turntables are often inexpensive and look fantastic, but they have limitations that can lead to irreversible damage, especially for beginner collectors. One major issue is that the stylus pressure is usually not adjustable, and ensuring a perfectly horizontal setup can be tricky. You can check if your turntable is level using a spirit level. Even if you can't adjust the stylus pressure, it's wise to measure it with a stylus pressure gauge. Generally, the recommended stylus pressure ranges between 1.5 and 2.5 grams. If the pressure is significantly higher, your records will wear out much faster.
Additionally, a turntable priced between €40 and €80 is unlikely to have a stylus that treats your records with care, let alone one capable of accurately reproducing the sound embedded in the grooves of LPs and singles.
Regardless of the turntable used, a stylus does not last forever. The average lifespan of a stylus is 200 to 1200 hours of playback, depending on the type and material. Want to learn more about styluses and cartridges? Read more.
